Volunteer with us!
Support our YIMBYs of NoVA Chapter by taking on one of our volunteer needs. Reach out to hello@yimbysofnova.org to learn more about any of these opportunities.
General Communications Support
Help spread the word about housing advocacy and our YIMBY social events! We need help to draft quick descriptions of events and actions, assemble materials for our newsletter, and craft posts for Facebook and Slack. This volunteer can focus on a specific jurisdiction (Arlington, Alexandria, or Fairfax), or work across the region.
Newsletter Author
We send a monthly newsletter to all our subscribers, covering content from all our jurisdictions. We are looking for someone to take content provided by other Leads and construct the newsletter in Action Network, our email platform. This would include sending a monthly reminder for Leads to provide content and doing basic editing. We can provide training on using Action Network. We estimate this will take approximately 2 hours per month, after getting up to speed on the tools.
Website Updater
We have a chapter website that keeps the public up to date about our activity. We are looking for someone to learn Wagtail, our CMS web management platform, and keep the website up to date with events, advocacy actions, news items, and other content. We will provide training on Wagtail. A volunteer could focus on just one of our jurisdictions (Arlington, Alexandria, or Fairfax), or all three if they have more time.
Social Event Planner
We love to get together with other YIMBYs! We are looking for a volunteer to plan social meet-ups. This can be Happy Hours, and also coffee meet ups for the early birds, playground playdates for folks with kids, dog park meet-ups for dog owners, etc. Ideally, we would have 1 social event a month. If you would like to organize an event for YIMBYs, let us know. This can be volunteering to organize a single event, or planning multiple during the year.
Housing Project Point Person
Is there a new apartment planned in your neighborhood? We are looking for volunteers to serve as the point person for new housing projects. This task can take more hours per month (probably 4-5), but for a limited timeframe. The point person follows the development project, provides summaries of key meetings and documents, and alerts other YIMBYs about how they can support the project. We will provide training for how to effectively follow the project.
Graphic Design
Good images get people excited about taking action or attending an event. We have access to Canva Premium and we would love to have a volunteer who can do simple graphics on a fairly quick turn-around time.
